'Bluebell' Grape (Cutting)
(Vitis spp.)
An extremely reliable and super productive seeded grape, very hardy and highly resistant to most fungal diseases that affect grapes in wet and humid areas. Bluebell produces copious amounts of clusters, full of large purple-blue grapes that ripen early. Vines are vigorous and perfect for a shade arbor or living fence. The fruit can be eaten fresh out of hand and taste like wild grapes with a strong, distinct ‘grape’ flavor. With its seeded, bold flavored fruit and high yields, bluebell is best used for making juice or preserves.
Flavor profile: Strong, tart, sweet, musky
Hardiness zone: 3b-8
Light: Full sun
Soil: Rich, well-drained soil with with pH 5.5-6.5
Spacing: 4-6’ depending on trellis system
Pollination: Bluebell grapes are self-fertile, so only one plant is needed for fruit
Planting tips: Make sure to give hardwood cuttings a fresh cut on the bottom end before planting. Root in a soilless medium. The key to rooting hardwood cuttings is a cold top and warm bottom to encourage callousing and root establishment before leaf growth, which can be achieved with a heat mat or by placing atop a fridge. When planting out, its recommended to have your permanent trellis already set up as grapes will need support as soon as they start growing.
Growing tips: Spur pruning is recommended for the best yields of Bluebell grapes.
